Drunk Tilt Poker

This was published 20-07-2008

Drinking and poker is one of the topics I like to talk about a lot, because one of the reasons why people lose a lot of money gambling is because they get drunk! Sure, just getting drunk isn’t enough to cause you to lose your money, but if you are a regular gambler and you start drinking, chances are the urge to gamble will get even higher and it will be much harder to turn down.

If you know you are going to go out drinking and get these kind of urges to gamble, HIDE YOUR COMPUTER. Do whatever you have to to make sure that when you stubmble in from the bar later, it is as hard as possible for you to log into your favorite online poker or online casino site.

I personally have come home several times from the bar and donked off hundreds and thousands of dollars on poker and casino sites. Last night I decided I would try to play some roulette when I got home on carbon poker. I bet black, 2nd 12 and 3rd 12 for about 10 hands straight. EVERY SINGLE TIME I lost and about 20 minutes later, my $500 was gone. I have never seen more low red numbers in a row in my life. Sure, this same thing probably would have happened if I was sober, but the difference is I probably wouldn’t have been playing the same higher stakes.

The same applies at the poker table. Yesterday I spent a few hours playing some Omaha and managed to work my $5 bankroll up to over $120. I logged off for a bit to go have some dinner, which included a few glasses of wine. When I got back, my play became much more erratic, loose and just plain stupid. This caused me to drop from over $100 all the way down to about $10. When you drink you get greedy, aggressive and the urge to win starts. Learn from my lessons, and just DON’T DO IT!

As you can see from my examples above, most of the money I have lost from playing poker has occured when I was drinking. So next time you want to gamble after a few drinks, sleep on it! You will thank me the next day.
